One of the most common misconceptions about having a home birth is that, it’s unsafe. The moment you tell someone about your decision to have a home birth. In comes all of the what if questions, floods of fearful comments and this just adds into the doubt that has been pushed into us about our bodies to birth safely, at home.
I get it. Majority of births that we see, that we have experienced and that we have heard about happen inside hospitals with an OBGYN. This has become the standard care. This environment has been deemed to be the safest place to give birth because of the on demand nurses, doctors, medication on stand by, machines to measure labor and access to interventions.
But Home birth can be just as safe as the hospital, if not more, especially for black and brown women.
Our options of care does not have to stop there. If you choose or want to have a home birth, asking questions and doing your research to make an informed decision could make all the difference in your birth experience.
